First I want to explain what I mean by “A Short Story”. It’s pretty self explanatory but just so you don’t get the wrong idea. BTS are known for their concepts and many of their mv’s have multiple storylines going on. One of them, and probably the one we as fans talk about the most is “who really died?”. They hint at all the memebers dying at some point or another and even though its a dark concept and not something to take lightly, I still think it’s a good way to set the tone and feel of their songs/ albums. BigHit has done this in such an excellent way and you get so attached to the characters they’ve set for the members. Therefore it has an even bigger impact when they decide to change the course of the boys lives and we see it abruptly coming to an end (or close to ending).
I wanted to show that impact with this edit. I chose Jungkook’s path and the effect this would have on the other members. I originally made this because of the clip from 1:35 to 1:45. Jungkook did such a great job acting in this scene, there is so much emotion conveyed and you really feel his pain, even though the scene only lasts a few seconds. Thats why I chose his story. Also the way he’s dressed and the rain falling around him seems almost unnatural, like he’s an angel watching the world unfold after he’s gone and theres nothing he can do to comfort the ones he loves. He also shouts “hyung” later in the original video which I also found very fitting for this story, but I decided not to include it.
To show his life with the members before his path comes to an abrupt end I decided to make the beginning in a ‘Super 8 Film’ kind of look to get the feeling that you’re watching memories, as most films shot on that camera are associated with old family films that usually bring out a happy and warm feeling. But then how quickly life can turn around and how the death of a friend can make your life feel like time is standing still (which is why the grieving scenes are in slow motion).
I hope you enjoyed this video, I started this a month ago and I just recently managed to pick it up again and finish it. I know it has some flaws and I know it’s a very simple edit but I think there is a time and a place for everything. And when it comes to sad edits like this one, a simple editing style, just showing the raw emotion, is more effective than flashy effects and transitions. I also know it’s a bit heavier than usual but I think it’s important to convey and trigger emotions in people, just like BTS do with their music videos. Some of the most beautiful movies in the world show and tell horrible and tragic stories but they all leave a mark on the person that watches it. That’s what I wanted this edit to do.
